Safe, stable housing is essential. Yet for many LGBTQ+ people, finding and maintaining housing remains a significant challenge due to discrimination, bias, and unequal treatment
Did You Know?
Proposed rules meant to hinder housing access to folks in the LGBTQ+ community merely exacerbate homelessness and housing insecurity for LGBTQ+ community members. Discriminatory housing practices meant to target marginalized populations, specifically LGBTQ+ folks, is merely one example of the housing discrimination often faced within this community.
The Reality of Housing Discrimination
Housing discrimination can take many forms. LGBTQ+ individuals may experience:
Being denied a rental application or housing opportunity.
Harassment or unequal treatment by landlords or property managers.
Eviction or retaliation after disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Unsafe living environments due to discrimination or lack of inclusive policies.
For transgender individuals in particular, being denied access to housing that aligns with their gender identity can place them at greater risk for homelessness, violence, and poor physical and mental health outcomes.
Why It Matters
Housing is more than having a place to sleep; it is the foundation for safety, stability, employment, education, and overall health. When people face discrimination in housing, the effects often extend far beyond where they live.
Housing insecurity is associated with increased stress, anxiety, depression, financial hardship, and reduced access to healthcare and community resources. Creating equitable housing opportunities helps strengthen individuals, families, and communities alike.
How You Can Help
Everyone has a role to play in creating safer, more inclusive communities.
You can support LGBTQ+ housing equity by:
Learning about fair housing protections in Colorado.
Speaking out against discrimination when you see it.
Supporting organizations that provide housing assistance and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Sharing accurate information about housing rights with friends, family, and community members.
Helping create welcoming and affirming spaces where everyone can feel safe and respected.
Looking Ahead
Ensuring equitable access to housing requires ongoing advocacy, education, and community support. While legal protections exist, continued awareness and collective action are essential to addressing the barriers many LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face.
At the Colorado Black Health Collaborative, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live in safe, stable, and affirming housing. By working together, we can help build healthier communities where every person is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.
