Black Mamas Matter

Supporting maternal mental health in the Black community is more than a cause; it’s a call for compassion. The CBHC’s Black Mamas Matter program creates a nurturing environment for moms, fosters resilience, and ensures that every mother’s mental well-being is prioritized. The program enables the CBHC, along with its partners and allies, to unite on behalf of healthy moms and thriving families by providing essential resources and fostering a supportive environment where every mom can thrive.

The main goal of the CBHC’s “Black Mamas Matter: Phase II” program is to create a culturally innovative, sustainable, and responsive maternal health resource delivery model that is currently unavailable to many Black and African American women and their families.

Reducing Stigma

Our program seeks to reduce stigma and build connections to community resources by sharing positive mental health messages in partnership with trusted community-based organizations, while advocating for the voices of Black mothers throughout their pregnancy journey.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many Black and African American women are experiencing heightened levels of depression, isolation, and social and emotional deprivation, as well as various other mental health conditions. They are also hesitant to engage with healthcare providers who lack cultural sensitivity.

By educating, advocating for, and providing resources to Colorado’s Black mothers, partners, families, and friends, the CBHC is taking steps to implement changes within local healthcare systems that promote integrated care, shared decision-making, and a focus on Black women.

Program Impact

In response to participants' requests, CBHC created a financial series covering issues highlighted by a survey completed by women participating in our program. There was an overwhelmingly positive response to the sessions, and over 200 participants have benefited from them thus far.

Multiple sessions, either in-person or virtual, have been presented to pregnant women and their supporters. These sessions address mental health, as well as other resources. Participants have found these sessions to be helpful.

Black Mamas Matter continues to expand and enhance partnerships in the Maternal Health Space.
